Estero Azul, just a short ride upstream from the town of Sierpe, might not look like a classic wildlife destination at first glance. The canal runs straight and neat, lined with houses, little farms, and sprawling plantations, but don’t let that fool you. Tucked into the narrow strip of trees and vegetation along the banks is a surprising abundance of wildlife, and the beauty of it is how close you can get to everything. It’s an easy place to spot all kinds of birds, curious monkeys, slithering snakes, and even the occasional crocodile, all while enjoying a leisurely ride on the water.

This is a perfect half-day excursion, especially if you’re looking for something accessible but still packed with nature. One of the best parts is that it’s practically next door to Las Vegas, our favorite spot in Sierpe for a bathroom break, a strong coffee, a good breakfast, or a cold drink to toast the morning’s adventure. We always recommend an early start, around 6 or 6:30 am, because the river is at its most magical then. The soft light, cool air, and calm water make the journey upriver an experience in itself, even before the wildlife starts to appear. Estero Azul might not have the rugged, untamed sprawl of Corcovado, but for a peaceful, wildlife-filled morning close to home, it’s hard to beat.
